An ovarian cyst is a small fluid-filled sac, surrounded by a very thin wall that develops within a woman's ovaries.
This commonly occurs in menstruating women and, most of the time, is asymptomatic and some recede without medical intervention.
In the US, ovarian cysts are found nearly on premenopausal women, and in up to 14.
8% on women of post menopausal period.
Although, for many women, an ovarian cyst may develop without symptoms, it is still very essential to know if any of the following occurrences are observed: - Lower abdominal or pelvic pain, which may start and stop and may be severe, sudden, and sharp - Irregular menstrual periods - Feeling of lower abdominal or pelvic pressure or fullness - Long term pelvic pain after strenuous exercise or sexual intercourse - Pain or pressure with urination or bowel movements - Nausea and vomiting - Vaginal pain or spots of blood from vagina - Infertility A medical care shall be sought if the following symptoms occur: - Fever - Abnormal pain or tenderness in the abdominal; or pelvic area - Nausea and vomiting - Weakness, dizziness or fainting - Pallor or anemia (possibly from loss of blood) - Abnormal heavy or irregular menstruation - Abdominal swelling or unusual increased abdominal girth - Abdominal pain if blood thinners such as warfarin are taken - Increased facial hair similar to a male pattern - High or low blood pressure unrelated to medications - Excessive thirst or urination - Unexplained weight loss - Noticeable abdominal or pelvic mass When a woman encounters the following symptoms, she shall go immediately to a hospital's emergency department: - Weakness, dizziness or fainting, especially from standing - Persistent fever - Severe lower abdominal or pelvic pain - High or low blood pressure unrelated to medications - Excessive thirst or urination - Unexplained shoulder pain combined with abdominal pain - Persistent nausea and vomiting Ovarian cyst affects women of all ages.
Though, in most cases, it is benign (noncancerous), some may also cause problems such as rupturing, bleeding, or pain, and surgery may be required to remove the cyst(s) larger than 5 centimeters in diameter.
Proper attention must be given if any of the listed symptoms occur.
