The Truth About Self Defense
"It is only when our rights are invaded or seriously menaced that we resent injuries or make preparation for our defense".
James Monroe 1823.
When you keep that statement in context he was talking about criteria that must be met for the United States to engage another country or sovereign power.
In the same way we as individual must have boundaries and know when the proper time to engage is.
It is the right of the individual to take the proper and correct course of action against another that would inflict harm upon them; however with that right comes an inherent responsibility.
Once you have engaged an attacker you need to be sure that the force you use is equal to the force brought against you.
There is a fine line between defending yourself and becoming the attacker or aggressor.
Let me give you a couple of example scenario's to help you understand.
Let's say you are at a party amongst friends and acquaintances and one slightly drunken individual grabs your wrist in a way that is uninviting to you, since it is a person you know the proper response might be to use a wrist release and simple say back off in a stalwart voice.
Now if they don't get the point and proceed to become violent with you a more aggressive action would be completely within bounds.
You are walking down the street and a stranger forcefully grabs your arm and immediately begins to pull you; that would require a higher level of reaction to come into play.
One possible reaction would be a wrist release, followed up by a palm heal strike; further action may be necessary if the attacker is still pursuing you.
There is no end to possible scenarios that you may encounter however with proper self defense training and practice you will be prepared to handle those situations to the best of your ability.
The truth about self defense: A complete self defense training program is the single best way to protect yourself; however even with the proper training you have to be careful not to turn from a defender to an attacker.
It isn't worth the legal action that may be brought against you; too many people have been sued by the very people that they were defending themselves from.
I'm tired of hearing about people being sued and punished for protecting their lives'.
What is wrong with society? Conclusion: I've laid out a few example scenarios to help you identify equal force; however each scenario is different requiring you to respond in ways only you can choose according to your own feelings of the threat level.
Self defense is the single best way to protect you from becoming a victim.
For that very reason you need to train properly and know what the proper boundaries are and how to administer equal force without crossing the line.
Remember the best time to learn your lesson about personal security and self defense is before something happens.
