Save Your Back and Get a Yard Sweeper!
I very much dislike raking leaves.
Every fall as a child, my parents would make me clear out all the icky leaves that had accumulated between the bushes against the fence separating our yard from the neighbors.
I remember how it really used to make me mad because most of the leaves weren't even falling from our own trees.
What injustice! Boy do I wish I would have had a yard sweeper back then.
A yard sweeper wouldn't have actually helped me get the leaves out from the fence, but I could have used it to keep the leaves off the lawn in the first place.
Thus not allowing them to accumulate over time.
Yard and lawn sweeper actually do help in just picking up the leaves after they been raked into smaller piles also, so that would have nice.
Bending over to pick up leaves and put them into a bag can be hard on the back.
And when raking, you have to do this a lot for each handful or rake full of leaves.
I used to be a zookeeper and spent a lot of days bent over raking...
well, all sorts of nasty stuff into trash bags.
A trick I learned back then was holding the trash bag open with your feet, and then raking in the contents.
But you still had to be bent over.
The great thing about lawn and yard sweepers are, they have a hopper which collects the leaves.
Once the hopper is full, you can lift it and dump it into a trash bag or compost bin.
This requires less bending over and stress on the back.
If you have a big yard and own a lawn or garden tractor, you have the option of getting a tow-behind sweeper.
These things are great! Some models, such as the Agri-Fab 38-Inch Tow Lawn Sweeper, allow you to even dump the hamper without even leaving the seat of your tractor.
Another great back saver! I don't know about you, but I'm not getting any younger, and anything that can help alleviate the stress on my back is welcome.
I used to spend the weekend raking leaves only to have sore back the next week while at work.
Personally, I like the more lightweight sweepers such as the Precision Products 26-Inch Push Lawn Sweeper.
Fairly inexpensive at around $112, it light and can even hang on your garage wall.
I'd rather keep up with the leaves as they fall with one of these sweepers then have to break my back an entire weekend.
