This is to prevent the dog from messing up the house while they are gone.
The dog will understand this if you give him his foods, water, and some toys with him inside then closing the crate.
If he knows that he has everything he needs in the crate, it won't be confused about the length of time he is going o stay there.

Also place a litter box for your do inside the crate.
This will make him poop inside while he stays in longer periods.
But if you get home and see that the dog didn't pooped, and then it is the time you take him outside.
Maybe he does not like to litter inside his home so take him outside immediately.
3.
Place the crate in an area in your house where there would be fewer things around.

The crate is not used to lock your dog and not let him walk around the house for good.
It is just a place for it to be alone and relax.
It will serve as his bedroom and not his entire house.
Let him get out of the pen when you are at home.
Keep the pen open so if the dog wants to go inside, he can just lie down in there.
