How to Paint Bathroom Formica
- 1). Remove all items off of the countertop, and clean it thoroughly with hot soapy water. Rinse the countertop and dry it.
- 2). Sand the entire Formica surface. Sanding will rough up the Formica so that the paint products will adhere to it. There is sandpaper supplied for you in each paint kit.
- 3). Repair fine cracks in the Formica with latex caulking. Spread a small bead of caulking across the crack and wipe a damp rag across it. The damp rag will push the caulking into the crack, and wipe off the excess at the same time. Allow the caulking to dry overnight.
- 4). Tape around the edge of everything that you do not want to get paint on that is in direct contact with the Formica. Place drop cloths on the floor to protect it from splatters.
- 5). Mix the base coat primer and epoxy together in a bucket, and pour the base coating onto the flat surface of the Formica. Spread the base coat over the Formica with the provided squeegee, and use the 4-inch roller and roller pad to evenly coat the entire surface. Carefully spread the color chip flakes across the Formica so that they will dry into the base coat.
- 6). Use your hand to wipe across the Formica to remove loose color chips. Lightly sand all high areas in the flakes with the sandpaper that is provided. Sanding off high areas of flakes will keep the Formica from having raised spots when it is clear coated.
- 7). Mix the clear coat and epoxy together in a bucket and pour the solution onto the flat surface of the Formica, and follow step 5 to evenly spread it out. Allow the clear coat to dry overnight, or for the amount of time recommended by the manufacturer, and then apply the final clear coat following the same steps you use to apply the first coat.
