Composting Medium for Toilets
- 1). Charge the composting chamber by mixing 3 cubic feet of peat moss with 1 cubic foot of untreated tree bark or straw. Mix all materials evenly to create an aerated composting bed. Some composting toilet chambers may require more charging material; if that's the case, try to keep the overall mixture a 3-to-1 ratio.
- 2). Add approximately 1/8 cubic foot -- about one handful -- of carbon-based material after each use of the composting toilet. Carbon-based materials include straw, oak leaves and pine shavings. You may add sawdust if the composting chamber is becoming excessively high in moisture content.
- 3). Recharge the composting chamber as the carbon-based materials break down. Typically using the materials from Step 1 at half capacity will be more than adequate for a recharge to the composting medium. Amounts will vary depending on the frequency of usage of the composting toilet.
- 4). Avoid adding vegetable waste to the composting chamber. This may encourage insect activity, as insects lay eggs in vegetable waste. It is better to add more dry carbon content material -- pine shavings and leaves -- to the composting chamber than not enough.
