Custom regulations have been reformed in recent years to combat corruption amongst custom officers and catch smugglers. During its civil war, Angola became infamous for arms and gem trafficking. However, corruption is still commonplace and tourists and business people still try to smuggle illegal materials into and out of the country. - Every visitor is allowed to enter the country tax free with one liter of alcohol, two liters of wine, 400 cigarettes or 500 grams of tobacco, personal hygiene items (one packet per product), 50 ml of perfume, objects appropriate for your profession, clothes, personal items and jewelry in “reasonable quantities.” You cannot take Angolan currency out of the country. Any Angolan currency you hold is subject to confiscation by custom officials.
- Upon entry to Angola, you must see a customs official if you are carrying controlled items (illicit drugs, firearms, plants, animals or any products), more than USD $15,000 or its equivalent in foreign currency or new electronic goods such as cameras, computers, CD players, or stoves. Iif you have used electronics, you are limited to two of each kind. As with any country, failure to declare can result in fines, confiscation and, if you are carrying illicit material, jail time.
- Under no circumstances can you leave Angola with firearms, ammunition, ivory, any wildlife species or products, pornography (or anything deemed pornographic), gambling equipment, pure alcohol, postal or fiscal stamps, food items or medicine deemed “dangerous,” antiques or heritage items.
