How to Determine How Long a Boat You Can Put on a Trailer
- 1). Measure the boat from the front to the back along the centerline of the boat. Do not include any appendages of your boat, such as the motor, swimming pad or bow pulpit, which is the front rail.
- 2). Add two to three feet onto the boat measurement to determine the length of the trailer needed to tow your boat safely.
- 3). Measure the width of your boat to determine the width of the trailer that is needed. Most boat trailers accommodate 102 inches, though some accommodate only 90 inches.
- 4). Calculate the weight of the boat to ensure that the trailer can safely carry the weight of your boat as well. The manual should indicate the dry weight of your boat. Add the weight of fuel, which is about seven pounds per gallon; the weight of the motor; any water you will carry, which weighs about eight pounds per gallon; and the weight of any gear.
