Workplace Health & Safety Regulations of 1992
- The Workplace Health and Safety Regulations of 1992 requires employers to ensure the health, welfare and safety of all employees in the workplace, including those with disabilities. It sets minimum standards for the physical environment of the workplace.
- The act contains measures that safeguard the health of workers. Work areas should have proper ventilation systems that draw fresh air from outside the facility and remove hot, humid air. Employers should maintain a reasonable temperature within the building. They must keep the workplace facility and its furnishings clean and properly dispose of waste materials.
- Employers must maintain buildings and equipment to protect the safety of employees. They should routinely monitor the condition of buildings and equipment. The workplace needs safe traffic routes free of obstructions for both vehicles and pedestrians. Windows should be installed in doors that swing both ways.
- Employers must provide sanitary facilities and washing areas. They also need to provide a safe drinking water source, such as a drinking fountain or bottled water dispenser. The act requires employers to provide seats in rest facilities so workers can relax and eat meals.
