Ideas & Instructions for Things to Make Out of Candy Wrappers
- The classic bubble gum wrapper chain is designed for stick-style wrappers measuring 2 by 5 inches. Fold each rectangle in half lengthwise to create a crease, then unfold it. Fold each side in to meet the center crease. Fold along the first crease, creating a 1/2-inch-wide narrow rectangle. Fold the rectangle in half horizontally to create a crease in the center. Fold each end in to meet the center crease. Then fold the wrapper in half horizontally again to create the link. Using a variety of wrappers, fold as many links as you need for the desired length of chain. Slide the prongs of one link into the folded slots of a second. Continue connecting links to form the zigzag chain.
- Measure your wrist, ankle, finger or neck to make wrapper chain jewelry. Create your desired link, and fasten it into place by sliding the prongs of one end into the open slots of the other end. You can sew rows of zigzag wrapper chains together for book covers, purses and picture frames. Measure the length of the book or frame. Create several wrapper chains of that length. Lay two chains side by side. Use a large needle and thread to weave under the top layer of the chain links and connect the rows. Continue until you have a solid piece of woven chain large enough for your book or craft.
- Decoupage is the process decorating a variety of objects with paper cutouts and varnish. Gather your favorite candy wrappers to decorate virtually anything including, light switch plates, picture frames, plastic or blown eggs for Easter, school binders or furniture. Iron wrappers on a low setting to flatten them, then apply them with glue to the item. Smooth out any wrinkles before adding a second wrapper. Overlap wrappers or cut out graphics to create your design. Allow the covered item to dry. Apply a layer of decoupage gel or clear varnish to seal the craft.
- Cut open the long side of a larger pouch-like candy package at the top of the logo. Apply iron-on vinyl to both sides of the candy pouch. Trim excess vinyl material around the edges. Add a zipper by placing it inside the cut sides. Glue the outer edge of the zipper to the insides of the wrapper.
- Make a cloth-like material with candy wrappers that you can then transform into doll dresses, purses, wrapping paper or tote bags. Begin by gluing together candy wrappers into the desired pattern. If using the same type of candy wrapper, try to line up each piece so the logo repeats itself to resemble real cloth patterns. Use a thin line of glue where each wrapper overlaps. Continue until you have a large section of solid wrapper paper. Apply iron-on vinyl to the top of the wrappers. Allow it to dry and cool completely. Use this piece in any cloth craft by cutting and sewing.
