Gavin Newsom takes a Stand

After attending President Bush?s State of the Union address in January 2004, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom was upset about the President?s call for a Constitutional Amendment banning same-sex marriage. Newsom decided in his new role as mayor of San Francisco he would do what he could to end discrimination in his city. At his urging, the city began performing gay and lesbian marriages beginning February 12, 2004.
