How to Make a Lined Drawstring Pouch

3
    • 1). Decide what you're going to use your pouch for. Are you going to use it for small objects, such as jewelry or marbles, or are you going to use it as a handbag? This will determine the amount of fabric you need to purchase.

    • 2). Cut a rectangle out of the fabric and lining fabric in the dimensions you want the finished pouch to be, plus five-eighths of an inch for the seam allowances. Cut a length of cording or ribbon for a drawstring equal to the diameter of the bag, plus extra inches.

    • 3). Use a fabric marker on the fabric and lining to mark 1 5/8 inches from the top and 2 5/8 inches from the top along the seam allowance on the wrong side of all four short ends.

    • 4). Fold each piece of fabric in half with the right sides together, so that the two short ends meet at the top. Lightly press with an iron to form a crease. This will be the bottom of the pouch.

    • 5). Place the fabric and the lining right sides together, and sew around the perimeter of the rectangle along the seam line. Leave the sides open between the marks made in step three and a small opening on one of the long sides of the lining. Turn the sewn fabric and lining right side out through the small opening and lightly iron.

    • 6). Make a small zigzag stitch between the dots for the drawstring channel on each of the four corners. This will prevent fraying when you insert the drawstring. Sew a straight line horizontally across the top of both ends between the left- and right-upper channel openings, being sure to back stitch. Repeat this for the lower channel openings.

    • 7). Fold the right sides of the fabric together and stitch both sides from the folded bottom up to the lower drawstring opening. Stitch again above the upper drawstring opening. Be sure to back stitch the upper and lower edges of the drawstring openings. Turn the pouch right side out through the top opening and press lightly.

    • 8). Attach a safety pin to the cord or ribbon drawstring and thread through the channel opening. Knot the loose ends of the drawstring.
