How to Convert AA Miles to Amtrak
- 1). Research how many Amtrak Guest Rewards points you want to earn. For example, a coach class ticket in Amtrak's northeast zone requires 3000 points while a business class seat on the Acela Express train is 8000 points. However, keep in mind that the maximum miles you can transfer from American AAdvantage to Hilton Honors is 10,000 miles in blocks of 5,000 miles so you might have to transfer more miles than you need.
- 2). Compute how many AAdvantage miles you want to transfer to Hilton Honors points, which transfer at a rate of two to one. Keep in mind that Hilton Honors grants 1500 Amtrak points for every 10,000 Hilton Honors points. You can transfer 5,000 American miles, which become 10,000 Hilton points and then 1500 Amtrak points. Or you can transfer 10,000 miles, which become 20,000 Hilton points and then 3000 Amtrak points.
- 3). Join Hilton Honors if you haven't already by going to hhonors.hilton.com or calling 800-HHONORS. Membership is free and immediate.
- 4). Call the AAdvantage customer service department at 800-882-8880 and explain that you want to transfer AAdvantage miles into Hilton Honors points. Be sure to have both your AAdvantage and Hilton Honors membership numbers and passwords for the agent.
- 5). Wait for the AAdvantage miles to appear as points in your Hilton Honors account, which you can check online. Allow three or four days.
- 6). Call the Hilton Honors customer service department at 800-548-8690 and explain that you want to transfer Hilton Honors points into Amtrak Guest Rewards points. Again, allow several days for the Hilton points to appear in your Amtrak account.
