How to Treat Shar-Pei Fever in Dogs
- 1). Evaluate your dog for signs of Shar-Pei Fever. Dogs with this condition may appear lethargic and have pain while moving. Your dog may also have a fever and seem disinterested in food.
- 2). Take your dog to the vet for an exam. If you have a large dog, have someone assist in carrying her to the car. This will minimize her pain. Contact your vet or emergency animal hospital and advise of your arrival.
- 3). Design a treatment plan for your dog. Anti-inflammatory drugs may be needed to reduce pain. Also ask about administering intravenous fluids to keep him hydrated. A drug called colchincine can also be provided to reduce fevers if your dog gets Shar-Pei Fever again.
- 4). Consider switching to a low-protein diet. Some dogs who experience episodes of Shar-Pei Fever respond well to a low protein diet. This may reduce the frequency of reoccurrence in your dog.
- 5). Monitor your dog closely. When your dog is recovering she should be monitored closely. If she appears to be increasingly lethargic or pain gets worse take her back to the vet.
