How to Register an ABN Business Name
- 1). Verify that the ABN that you would like to register is available in the Australian Business Register. Navigate to the Australian government's ABN Lookup website. Type your desired business name in the "Search text" and click "Search" to scan the ABN database. If there is already a business using your desired trade name in your state, then you will need to modify the name.
- 2). Search Intellectual Property Australia's trademarks database to verify that your desired ABN isn't already trademarked in Australia. Enter your desired ABN in the "Word/Image" field and click "Search" to find out whether your ABN has already been trademarked. If it has already been trademarked, then you'll need to operate under a different business name.
- 3). Apply for an ABN with the Australian Business Register. Read the privacy statement and click the "I've read this statement" button at the bottom of the page. On the next page, click the "Start a new ABN application" button at the bottom of that page.
- 4). Fill out the online ABN application form. You will need to provide information on the type of business you are starting, personal and contact information, your desired trade name, and information on your bank account and tax details. There is no fee for your application.
- 5). Fill out an application to register your business in each state or territory in which you plan to operate. Click on the link to your state or territory's business registration application at the Australian government's business resources website. Provide information regarding the business and its operators and return the application to the state or territory's business registration authority.
