How to Install the FD3S Boost Gauge
- If you are using an A-pillar mount, test-fit the gauge first. You may have to trim a little of the mount to get a good fit. If you are not using an A-pillar mount, find a suitable place to install the gauge where it is visible while driving, such as on the steering column.
- Wire the lights for the gauge into the existing dash lights. You can use any of the existing gauge wires, but the ashtray light works well. Remove the center console and pull out the wires for the ashtray light. Use some extra wire and splice from the boost gauge light wire to the wires that go to the ashtray. Ground the black wire on the boost gauge to a suitable metal ground within the dash.
- Cut a hole in the rubber gasket that surrounds the steering column where it runs through the firewall. You can also drill a new hole in the firewall for the vacuum line. If you do this, be sure to install a rubber washer to protect the line from rubbing. Insert the vacuum line for the gauge through this hole by pushing it through the opening with a thin screwdriver or similar tool. You many need to purchase some extra vacuum line if the gauge does not come with enough to go from the A-pillar mount to the intake manifold.
- Attach the vacuum line to the nipple located between the two sets of intake runners on the right side of the car. Temove a rubber capper from this fitting before installing the vacuum line. Note that the vacuum line may not be the same size as the nipple on the intake manifold, in which case you will need a brass adapter to attach the line that came with the boost gauge to the line that goes to the manifold. Make sure the line does not touch any hot engine parts or moving parts.
- Connect the other end of the vacuum line to the gauge after you have connected it to the intake manifold. The line attaches with the adapter nut, ferrule and sealing nut. Test the gauge before finishing the installation on the A-pillar. The gauge should read the boost lever when the engine is running and then return to zero when the car is turned off. Route the wires under the A-pillar padding and trim so that are not visible and finish installing the mount with the gauge.
