Types of Blood Pressure Medications
- Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE) are a type of high blood pressure medication that treats heart failure symptoms in addition to lowering blood pressure. This medication may be prescribed for someone who has chest pain or diabetes because it reduces chest pain and does not interfere with blood sugar levels. ACE inhibitors work by expanding blood vessels and letting blood flow more easily. This lowers high blood pressure and enables the heart to work more efficiently.

- This type of high blood pressure medication decreases the frequency of nerve impulses to blood vessels in the heart. This allows blood to flow easily, causing blood pressure to lower. Alpha-blockers can also treat prostate problems.
- Vasodilators relax the muscles in the blood vessels, causing them to open and let blood flow more easily. This type of high blood pressure medication also treats heart failure and pulmonary hypertension, which is high blood pressure in the lungs.
- This medication prevents a chemical called angiotensin II from affecting the heart and blood vessels leading to the heart. The blood vessels are able to open up, letting blood flow through them freely and keeping blood pressure down.
