• 1). Look into potential destinations for your trip to South America. Consider your interests, budget and the amount of time you have. Some recommended South American destinations are Machu Picchu, Peru; Galápagos Islands, Ecuador; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Buenos Aires, Argentina; San Pedro de Atacama, Chile.
  
  
• 2). Research the area where you plan on traveling. You can get cultural tips and essential information from people that have already traveled there. The Internet is a great research tool, and several travel guide books are available for research, including the "Lonely Planet's South America on a Shoestring." English is not a common language in South America, so look into a buying a phrase book or taking a language course.
  
  
• 3). Several vaccinations should be taken in preparation to a trip to South America. Smallpox, Yellow Fever (for travel to the Amazon Basin), Typhoid, Polio, Cholera and Diphtheria-Tetanus are vaccinations to look into getting. It is also smart to bring a full first-aid medical kit, especially if you are backpacking through the region, and therefore more exposed to the elements.
  
  
• 4). You can set your own itinerary or look into one of many South American tour packages that are available through travel websites and organizations. Search for flights and book hotels on travel websites so you can compare prices. Kayak is a popular site for flights, accommodations and tours.
  
  
• 5). The clothes and gear you pack depend on where you go and what time of year you are going. The mountains and the jungle have extreme weather and terrain, so make sure to research the area and pack accordingly.
  
  
• 6). Make sure you have enough money to fund your trip and get you back home. You can easily get by on $1000 per month, but organize your budget and look into expenses before your trip.
