How to Grow Organic Wheatgrass at Home
- 1). Purchase organic bulk wheatgrass seeds, or wheat berries, from a sprout retailer or online distributor. Buying wheatgrass seeds in bulk will cost substantially less than purchasing separate wheatgrass growing kits.
- 2). Sprout the wheatgrass seeds before planting. Pour 1 cup of wheatgrass seeds into a large bowl. Add 2 to 3 cups of water, and allow the wheat berries to soak overnight. Drain the seeds the next day, and rinse them in clean water. If the wheatgrass seeds have not sprouted after the first soaking, add 2 to 3 cups of clean water and soak overnight again. Continue to drain, rinse and re-soak the wheatgrass seeds until they sprout a visible root 1/8 inch long.
- 3). Lay two to four all-natural paper towels in the bottom of a 21-by-11-by-2-inch tray. Regular paper towels include bleach and/or color dyes, which could leach into the soil and soak into the organic wheatgrass.
- 4). Fill the tray with a 1/2-inch layer of vermiculite. Spray the vermiculite with water, and mix it with your fingers so every square inch of growing medium is moist. Continue to spray and mix until the vermiculite is damp.
- 5). Rinse the seeds with clean water, and spread them over the vermiculite to cover the soil. Graze your hand over the seeds to distribute them as evenly as you can, and then press down gently on the seeds to create good soil to seed contact. This part does not have to be perfect for you to have successful wheatgrass growth. If a few seeds lie atop each other, that is not a problem -- they will grow just fine.
- 6). Accelerate the growth of your organic wheatgrass seeds by placing a plastic dome or lid over the tray. Cut four or six tiny holes in the lid with a knife for air circulation.
- 7). Spray the seeds with water up to two times per day while they are germinating and producing their roots under the soil. Keep the tray next to a window or somewhere receiving indirect light.
- 8). Remove the lid when the wheatgrass reaches 1 inch in height. Continue to give the wheatgrass sprouts and vermiculite enough water to stay moist until the wheatgrass has developed roots. After root development, water the vermiculite once per day.
