Why I admire American Mums
I don't know any American mum's personally but they are everywhere aren't they? I think the reason I bump into so many American mum's is because I'm very active online and when I go hunting for articles on health and fitness, muffin recipes, stocks and shares, gardening, travel, in fact, whatever the subject is, I can usually turn up half a dozen blogs on the subject. What's really fascinating is that a large portion of those are mum's.
At first I thought it was coincidence but no longer. Last week whilst surfing the web for body building I found several websites and some of the most impressive of the women body builders were you guessed it American Mums. Its true look up JNL, or Jennifer Nicole Lee, author of ‘The busy mum fitness plan', what an incredible person. Incidentally, my last yoga instructor in London was an American mum juggling 3 young ones, baby sitting for friends, leading yoga sessions around London and also starting her own charity offering yoga to children.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not lazy I have achieved a lot though I'm not a mum I wonder if I could have achieved so much if things had been different. Although from Yorkshire originally I went to university in the states on a tennis scholarship to South Carolina. Whilst over there I was fortunate enough to meet a mature student called MaryLou Mclean – she would become my American Mum and she was also a remarkable person.
This lovely lady married to a Dr had 5 children and 12 grandchildren. I always used to joke that she had more grandchildren than I had pairs of shoes it was really incredible. MaryLou was a student of history like me a full time housewife and socialite. As a working women she had been posted in Germany during the war and in her spare time had learned to fly aeroplanes. MaryLou was not of the internet generation but if she had been I have no doubt that she would have been a prolific writer of blogs.
So what is it about American mum's? Why are they out-performing the rest of us in so many areas where does all of this energy and ambition come from?
Having spent some time in the US, Id say that a high level of education probably has something to do with it and there's also something in the cowgirl spirit which is about sharing and being social which probably lends itself well to blogging. Whatever it is I can only sit back and admire the spirit.
