Homeland Security Offers Employment for Veterans

1
Employment for veterans is a major goal of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The Department has announced it wants to increase its current workforce of 47,000 veterans to at least 50,000 by the end of 2012, and has created a one-stop Web site for veterans looking for jobs.

The DHS Veteran Outreach Web site features information for veterans about how to find employment opportunities at the Homeland Security Department, ways to get involved in community-based efforts such as Citizen Corps, and special veteran programs such as Operation Warfighter and Wounded Warrior, which provide job opportunities for severely wounded or recovering servicemembers to assist their transition back to the military or civilian work force.

The Web site also features Homeland Security government contracting opportunities for businesses owned by veterans and service-disabled veterans, and features information about Homeland Security policies and news affecting the veteran community. Over the last two years, the Department of Homeland Security has awarded approximately $900 million in prime contracts to non-disabled and service disabled veteran-owned small businesses.

"This new Web site reflects the shared commitment across the department to hiring American veterans," Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said in a press release. "Veterans play a vital role in the Department of Homeland Security's mission to protect the nation, and this Web site will help us build our veteran work force to more than 50,000 departmentwide by 2012."

Veterans Preference in Government Job Hiring
Recognizing their sacrifice, Congress enacted laws to prevent veterans seeking federal employment from being penalized for their time in military service.

Veterans preference recognizes the economic loss suffered by citizens who have served their country in uniform, restores veterans to a favorable competitive position for Government employment, and acknowledges the larger obligation owed to veterans.
