How to Convert a Loft to a Bedroom
- 1). Remove anything you previously had stored in the loft. Move storage to your basement, garage, or elsewhere in your house. If you have no room for storage anywhere else in your home, consider opening or adding to an account with a private storage facility.
- 2). Install building insulation if you don't already have it. If you are not experienced installing insulation, this may be a job best hired out to a local insulation contractor.
This will help preserve thermal comfort while minimizing heating and cooling costs within your home by keeping warm air inside during the winter, and cool air inside during the summer. - 3). Cover any exposed insulation with drywall. Start with the ceiling first if you have a flat ceiling, then work to the walls. Naturally, once again if you are not experienced at building codes and installing drywall, you will probably want to hire a specialist to take care of this for you.

Paint the walls to match a color scheme you intend for the room. Keep in mind your purpose for the room, and choose a color or colors that are congruent to the feel you would like the finished bedroom to have.
For a contemporary theme, choose an ivory, beige, or other subtle colors. For a southwestern theme, use subdued yellows, oranges, and reds. If you desire an Asian theme, use jade green, a natural brown, or a warm gold, and accent with a darker color like a deep red or black. - 1

Add furniture to the loft. To convert your loft into a bedroom, you will need either a bed, or a couch that can act as one. You can also add a coffee table, end tables, nightstands, or any other furniture that matches your space and makes sense for your purpose. - 2

Add color coordinated upholstery, bedding, rugs and curtains to increase the room's warmth. The interior decor is the main thing that will separate your loft from an attic or whatever it used to be, and make it feel like an integrated bedroom in your house. - 3
