What Are ECI Students?
- ECI offers three high school programs: public school, private school and private boarding school. Each program spans one academic year or one semester, and students must maintain a minimum grade of "C" in every class. The public school program allows students to live with a volunteer host family to learn and use English and explore the American lifestyle. In exchange, the host family learns about the student's culture and background. California, Florida, Illinois and Texas are some of the locations students can select.
The private school program is designed for students to live with a host family and attend a private school. The program fee includes room and board, school tuition, medical insurance and services to find a host family. Students who want a slightly different experience can enroll in the private boarding school program. Students live on a school campus with locations in states such as Oregon, Kansas and Colorado. - ECI students can also apply for two short cultural programs: a three-week summer English program and a one month university introduction program. The three-week summer English program provides 15 hours of American history and English language instruction per week, and weekend sojourns to historical locations. The one month university introduction program also provides 15 hours of English language and American history study per week, but gives students the benefit of classes in a university setting. Students are also taken on special trips and outings. This program has locations in Rapid City, South Dakota; Shawnee, Oklahoma; and Oklahoma City.
- The TOEFL preparation program gives ECI students the opportunity to live with a host family and immerse themselves in the English language in preparation for the Test of English as a Foreign Language exam. This two to three month program focuses on reading, grammar and listening skills and is located in Oklahoma City. ECI also offers special and customized programs for business people, medical workers, teachers and other foreign professionals who want to refine their English language skills. ECI provides tutors who instruct participants in specialized vocabulary and technical terms. Students are housed with host families, in hotels, and in university dormitories, and take weekend trips to Branson, Dallas and historical sites in Oklahoma. The duration of the program is usually from two to five weeks.
- ECI's Travel and Recreation For International People (TRIP) program, gives students the chance to travel to several states to learn about American culture. Students must be 16 years of age or older if traveling alone, though children under the age of 16 can participate if accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Professors who teach at a university or college, or who are studying English at an international exchange program can also participate. TRIP locations are in Dallas, San Antonio, Santa Fe and Branson.
- If you're an ECI student participating in the high school programs, you must observe several rules and regulations. You cannot drink alcohol, smoke (unless you are 18 or older and indicate that you're a smoker on your application), buy, sell or possess illegal drugs or make life changing decisions such as deciding to get married. You must respect your host family's rules and you cannot travel without your host family, hitchhike or miss school for any reason other than illness.
