Examination and Diagnosis

• Because the parvo virus can be fatal to your dog, he should be taken to a veterinarian for examination, diagnosis and initial treatment when symptoms occur.
  
  

Vomiting and Diarrhea

• In the event your dog experiences severe vomiting, use arsenicum album (30C). Give him one dose of this each hour for six hours, and then four doses each day until the vomiting stops. If the vomitus is bloody, use phosphorus (30C) at the same dosage as arsenicum album.
  
  Should your dog have severe diarrhea, use arsenicum album (30C) in the same dosage as above. If there is blood in your dog's feces, four doses of mercurius corrosivus (30C) each day can help improve his condition.
  
  

Dehydration

• When the worst of the vomiting and diarrhea has subsided, give your dog China (six X, or moderate strength). This extract from the Peruvian cinchona bark, which also produces quinine, restores strength after excessive loss of fluid. You also can give him unflavored water that has electrolytes.This can be found in most supermarkets.
  
  

Immune System

• To strengthen your dog's weakened immune system, you can give him Vitamin C (5mg to 10mg per pound, two to three times daily) and Vitamin E (at the same dosage as above, but only once daily).
  
  You may also give your dog probiotics and digestive enzymes to restore normal intestinal bacteria, especially if he's been given antibiotics.
  
  

Considerations

• As parvo is a virus and, thus, communicable among the canine population, it is important to disinfect all material with which your dog comes in contact. You can do this with a bleach/water solution. This includes all bedding, feeding and watering dishes, toys and play or exercise areas.
