- 1). Locate the car’s current title certificate. Have the current owner sign the signature field on it that indicates they release ownership of the car title to the bearer of the certificate.
- 2). Take the signed car title to your state’s department of motor vehicles. Bring along anyone else whose name will appear on the new car title and state issued identification cards for all parties.
- 3). Explain to the DMV representative that you wish to transfer the car title. Fill out the form she gives you to the best of your knowledge. Present the signed over car title and the identification cards to the representative. Pay any fees associated with transferring title ownership. Receive your certified copy of the new car title.
- 4). Provide your insurance company with a copy of the new car title showing the required owners but keep the original car title for own records.
