How to Get a License Plate in Georgia
- 1). Contact your county tag office. Look through the yellow pages or check the Internet for your local tag office's contact information or website. Georgia counties have their own jurisdictions and their requirements differ from county to county. Therefore, it is important to contact the tag office in your county of residence for an extensive listing of their requirements.
Most counties list their license plate requirements on the county government website. - 2). Gather your documents. After reading your counties' license plate requirements, you will need to gather the required documents. Essential documents required in all counties include proof of ownership represented by car titles, manufacturer's certificate of origin or a registration certificate from a non-title state or country; proof of Georgia residency; proof of insurance under a Georgia issued policy and a valid Georgia Drivers License.
Valid emissions is required for most vehicles; however, emissions is only required for residents of the metropolitan Atlanta area. If your car requires emissions, you must take it in for an emissions test at one of the many testing centers located throughout metropolitan Atlanta. The cost of the emissions test is $20.

The processing time should not take longer than 10 minutes once the clerk has access to all of your information. If your car title was not issued by the state of Georgia, the clerk will take it and reissue a new title. Your Georgia issued car title will be mailed to you and should be received within a few weeks. Once all fees are paid, your license plate will be given to you on the spot.
