The End of Walkman Age- SONY Shut-down Walkman Style Tape
According to reports, SONY announced on October 25th that it will stop producing and selling walkman style tape in Japan. Last batch of products has been shipment to these big retailers on April, and it will not produce more after selling out.

Sony's spokeswoman Nakamura Shun Son said because the way for the customer to listen music has changed to digital audio and sales volume for tape had decreased a lot. Tape once changed the way for people to enjoy music thoroughly, but with the rapid development of digital technology, and its status has been replaced by digital music player. Especially the newest ipod marketed by Apple Inc is really a strike for the walkman. This newest ipod owns 3G function, touch screen and the new iLife. News reports said, oversea manufacturer http://www.dinodirect.com/se-ipod/ began to produce the ipod cover from July. There is a gap on one side of cover, and it shows the newest ipod will be equipped with volume button.
On Sony official website, the tape has been marked "stop production". The company also said the walkman tape production will continue in China and the product will be sold in North America, Europe and Asian markets (excluding Japan).
But SONY only stops selling walkman style tapes. CDS, Mini Disc and flash type walkman will continue production and sales around the world.

The inspiration of SONY walkman tape was from its founder Ibuka Masaru. Once in his trip abroad, he thought tape recorder was so heavy that he could not enjoy music conveniently, therefore, he decided to design a truly portable cassette recorder. When the engineer finished the first design drowning by hand, the time changed.
The first SONY walkman tape came out on July 1, 1979. At first, this type which not equipped with recording function not well regarded by retailers. However, only two months later, its sales volume has reached 3 million, and in 10 year sold 5000 sets, till now it has reached 220 million.
