Types of VGA Cables
- Video Graphics Array (VGA) is the basic standard of measurement for resolution and display of video graphic images on computer monitors and other electronic equipment. VGA cables are the means by which the signals from the computer are transmitted to the monitor or projector. Modern computers support VGA but only as the minimum standard of resolution. Newer computers are also preinstalled with more advanced video graphics display capabilities. For instance, Super VGA (SVGA) offers higher resolution and graphic features than standard VGA.
- A VGA splitter cable allows images from the computer to be displayed between two and eight separate monitors or screens. Splitters typically send the same image up to 200 feet away from the computer. Applications in which splitters are used include data centers, help desks and video broadcasting. Splitters are also available in models that provide signal boosting or amplification.
- Extension cables are used with high-definition monitors to produce a stronger signal. They are distinguished by a 15-pin plug with two large external screws. On laptop computers they are usually situated next to the USB port. Extension VGA cables are used for computer and video monitors, game consoles and other electronics. They are normally between 50 and 100 feet long.
- Plenum rated VGA Cables are used in applications such as educational or commercial installation. The plenum space in a building refers to places where air is allowed to circulate such as air ducts or ventilation. Because of the amount of oxygen in these spaces, there is greater potential for fire to spread. Plenum rated cables are specially made with a flame retardant, low smoke production covering so that they do not easily burn. Types of plenum rated cables include audio/video or video only capabilities.
- This type of VGA cable is specially made to be installed inside the walls of buildings. It is rated as CL2 and is identified by a stamp on the jacket of the cable. Class two cables are appropriate for in-wall, non plenum installation. They are double shielded and equipped with noise filters.
- Other types of VGA cables include angled, connected and flex cables. These cables are designed for specific applications where video equipment is installed in tight spaces or mounted at unusual angles. In addition, wireless VGA equipment can be purchased with or without video. Wireless VGA is often used for wall mounted plasma television display.
