Impact of Climatic Changes on Women

1
The serious changes in the global climatic conditions have serious perceived consequences some of which have started manifesting today.
These impacts ranging from shortages in the amount of rainfall in certain areas and excess in some others have already started affecting man.
One of the groups most affected are women especially in developing and most poor nations.
In these places, women are charged with the responsibility of attending to the domestic chores of the home.
Cooking, washing, child-care, sanitation, etc.
are almost solely borne by women.
These activities involves the utilization of natural resources like water and cooking fuel (fuel wood, kerosene, gas and animal dungs).
Coincidentally, these resources are seriously being affected by climatic changes.
For instance, in arid regions of the Middle East and northern Africa (Sudan, Ethiopia and Somalia) where the amount of rainfall has drastically reduced, sourcing water for consumption and sanitation has increasingly become a serious problem.
Conditions are at near drought situation and in some places, full drought conditions have been reported.
This therefore results in women trekking several kilometers in search of water for their families.
In poor nations, fuelwood is the major cooking fuel for many communities and has been aggravated more by the present global economic recess.
Climatic changes in the arid and semi arid regions means that lesser vegetative growth and increased aridity would be seen.
The rural poor women would therefore find it increasingly difficult to get wood to cook food for their homes.
This means increased economic hardship n them too.
In coastal areas were increased rainfall results as a result of climatic changes, flooding becomes a common and regular occurrence.
Nations like Philippines, Haiti and other island states have seen increased flood regimes and some areas are at the risk of being submerged.
The woman who is the home-keeper is most affected when her home is devastated by flood.
In both cases of excessive rain intensity and shortage in rainfall, farming activities are seriously affected.
Flooding from excessive rainfall washes away crops in the farm while shortage of rainfall hampers the growth of crops.
Both cases threaten the food security of the home.
SOLUTION Curtailing climatic change is an option that need not be argued.
The main problem is how to go about it.
Studies show that anthropogenic and industrial activities are the major causes of climatic changes.
If that be the case, the practical solution should be to cut down to the minimum on the activities that result to climatic changes.
This has been difficult to implement by many nations because their economies are driven by such activities.
These activities resulting to changes in climatic conditions are placing serious burden on women, the mothers of mankind.
We should not continue to risk the human lives and existence for financial benefits.
Let everyone arise and act today against climatic changes and save our women and homes the grieves of a battered global climate.
