Experience Kaikoura Seafest This October
If there's one thing Kaikoura is famous for it is their connection to the sea and especially seafood, it's name even means "to eat crayfish".
Located on the upper east coast of the South Island, Kaikoura is part of the North Canterbury region and has a strong history with whaling, as well as being a place of spiritual significance to Maori.
Whilst there has not been any whaling in the region for decades, you can now enjoy their majesty and beauty by partaking in a whale watch tour which also includes other sea life, including dolphins and native birds.
Another of the regions main attractions is the abundant seafood, so much so, that there is even an annual event to celebrate.
Seafest has been an annual event since 1995 and has grown into a food, wine, and music festival over two days.
The event is held in October and the website has all the details about dates, times, and pricing.
Some of the things you will find there are outlined below: Cuisine In the food tent and the stalls there a wide range of food available incluidng, of course, "the bounty of the sea" such as crayfish, scallops, mussels, and a range of fish, locally sourced and produced items such as bratwurst pork sausages, and hydroponic strawberries, cheeses, and handmade chocolates to name a few.
You'll be able to sample products from boutique producers, as well as commercial manufacturers.
Additionally there are cooking demonstrations from television personalities, in 2012 the presenter was MasterChef contestant, Jax Hamilton.
Beverages There are plenty of refreshments on hand which are predominantly locally produced soft drinks, juices, and craft beers, as well as award winning wines from the Marlborough, North Canterbury, and Kaikoura.
You'll be able to sample the products as well as connect with the producers and gain insight and information about food and beverage matching.
Entertainment No festival is complete without a great range of music, entertainment, and contests.
Seafest sees local and national singers, musicians, and bands and entertainers perform throughout the event.
There is also a tradition of dressing the theme with prizes for 'Best Dressed'.
The children are also catered for with face painting, clowns, and a magician to keep them entertained and happy.
There are also a wide range of retail stalls for those keen on arts, crafts, and Kiwiana.
If you are planning to visit Kaikoura and attend the Seafest, it's highly recommended to book your accommodation early due to the popularity of the event.
