Launching the Cocoon- a new innovation in internal space
Specialist interior fit out contractor, WOW contracting, has launched Cocoon – an innovative and flexible addition to the professional environment. Inspired by nature, Cocoon is a lightweight yet exceptionally hardwearing and versatile structure.
Curvaceous in shape, it provides protection and privacy to those inside and enables the simple creation of internal spaces that can be used for a multitude of purposes at an extremely competitive price.
A self contained pod, Cocoon is only limited by its owner's imagination. It can be anything from a boardroom to an executive office, a meeting room to a server suite, breakout room or reception area – and more. It is the perfect choice for corporations, universities, charities and events companies to provide an attractive and stimulating working environment that fits their requirements when they need it most.
Using their established flair for ingenuity and eye for the unusual, WOW Contracting designed Cocoon in response to market demand for a flexible structure that could meet the needs of a number of different applications whilst creating a strong statement of individuality.
The prefabricated structure can be erected permanently or broken down and moved around buildings or company campuses according to use – every piece is designed to be lightweight and to fit into service lifts – giving it immense design flexibility. A permanent structure that is mobile, it can be easily dismantled and rebuilt. It can even be rented for exhibitions, events or temporary use.
The shell of each Cocoon is based around panelling modules which fit together to form a self supporting structure that is easily joined together onsite.
Each module comprises of a pair of plywood ribs and supporting laths bonded to a thermoformed curved cladding of Corian. The panels are simply bolted together through the ribs and the inner lining hooked on. The ends of the structure can be finished with glazing, including single or double glazed frameless glass with a choice of either sliding or conventional framed doors. They can also be solid walls or left open.
Corian panels were specifically chosen for cladding owing to their performance. Highly flexible and lightweight yet robust, they accommodate impact with any superficial damage being easily "worked out" – an ideal range of attributes for a structure that has been designed to be relocated. Internally, matching panels can be used, or a range of plywood laminates, veneers or lacquers. Colours can also be chosen to match branding or workspaces.
The flexibility of Cocoon continues inside as the cavity between the outer and inner skin can be filled with acoustic insulation – making it just as private and secure as its biological namesake. Mechanical and electrical services can also be installed in this space, from full electrical provision to the addition of air conditioning ducting connected to fans and outlets discretely placed in the interior.
Its height of 2,500 mm guarantees that it will fit into the majority of office spaces, whilst its 750mm width conforms to 1,500 mm standard office planning grids.
Design and build specialists, WOW Contracting designed the Cocoon with sustainability in mind. Its robustness grants it a long lifecycle and its parts can be easily recycled or reworked into new products at the end of its lifespan. All wood used in the creation of Cocoon is fully accredited with FSC Certification for sustainability.
