Uses for Crushed Glass

Crushed glass has a variety of uses in home design and in arts and crafts projects. The consistency of crushed glass is thicker than sand, but less than a group of tiny pebbles. Crushed glass is available commercially in a variety of colors, but you can make your own with colorful bottles and an electric disposal. - Use different colors of crushed glass to create a mosaic image that you can display as wall art or a sun catcher. Trace an image onto thick cardboard or a sheet of glass, depending on the method of display. Glass or cardboard inserts from old picture frames work well for this project. Cover one section of the design with a thin coating of viscous jeweler's glue. Sprinkle the crushed glass into the glue. Make sure to wear gloves whenever handing the crushed glass. Continue to "paint" the image with jeweler's glue and different colors of crushed glass. Allow the mosaic art to dry before tilting it up for display.
- Decorate a fat pillar candle with bits of crushed glass to make a sparkling variation of a grunge candle. Grunge, or grubby, candles are typically covered with potpourri and other botanicals. To attach the crushed glass to the candles, spread a layer of crushed glass on a sheet of wax paper. Melt a small amount of paraffin wax in the microwave according to the manufacturer's directions. Spread a small amount of wax onto one side of the candle, from the top to the bottom.
Press the side of the candle covered in the fresh wax into the crushed glass. Hold for about 30 seconds, until the wax begins to harden and the glass bits remain on the side of the candle. Cover the pillar candle with the crushed glass, one strip at a time. - Fill the bottom half of a clear glass vase with layers of different colored crushed glass to create a glassy base for a floral arrangement. Make each layer between 1/2 and 2 inches thick. Try to keep the layers uniform for best results. Insert a thin dowel inside the vase between the side and the crushed glass to blend the colors together or make waves, similar to creating sand art. Stand the floral stems in the crushed-glass base to complete the arrangement.
