How to Improve 2WD Traction in Snow With Weights
- 1). Locate the rear drive axle of your car. This will also be directly above the rear wheels of the car or truck.
- 2). Find your vehicle's information sheet, usually a sticker under the hood or on the door frame, and make note of the gross axle weight rating (GAWR) of the rear axle. This is the maximum amount of weight the rear axle can safely carry. Experiment with adding more sandbags until you attain the desired amount of traction, but never exceed this weight limit.
- 3). Place a number of filled sandbags into the bed of the truck or into the trunk of the car directly over the rear axle.
- 4). Secure the sandbags in place over the rear axle using some ratchet straps. In pickup trucks this can be accomplished by fastening them to factory built-in tie down loops, while in cars, vans, SUVs and hatchbacks you can secure the straps to exposed metal body moldings, factory installed cargo loops, or by bracing the sandbags in place with luggage. The idea is to keep the weight secured as tightly as possible over the rear axle.
