To obtain a work visa, your employer in the U.S. must obtain a labor certification before you can apply for a visa. Student visas require that student to return home after his education is complete and the funds to support himself while in the U.S. To obtain a visitor visa, you must show that you will be visiting for a limited amount of time, will be returning to your home and have the funds to support yourself during your stay in the U.S.

If you are applying for an immigration visa, your family member or sponsor must file with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services a Petition for Alien Relative or Petition for Alien Worker.
