According to online guru's starting a successful online business is all about finding an under serviced niche in an area you have an interest in. You list your interests, use one or more of the free website that have been set up to show you how often people search in that area (keyword search site) and then try to find a sub niche with very little competition. If there are enough people performing searches in your sub niche then you can go ahead and set up your website.
The problem with searching for a unique niche in an area you have an interest in, is that finding it (which is difficult enough) is only a small part of what you need to do. Once you have your niche you have to research your target market, to make sure your promotions are reaching people who truly have an interest in your product or service. Then you have to find out what your target markets hot buttons are. Do they want luxury, convenience or great bargains? The solution?

Most people approach the idea of going into business with the belief that in order to be successful they have to set up a totally unique business. Offer a new product or a totally different service. Nothing could be further from the truth.
If the service or product you sell is not something people are familiar with and they've done without it up to now, why would they feel they had a need for it? Established businesses have already spent time and money finding their target market and analyzing their needs and hot buttons. Take advantage of their hard work and expensive research. All you have to do is to perform a search in one of your interest areas and bookmark the top sites.
Using the same words you used to search for the top sites in your areas of interest go to the keyword sites and see what the demand is. The odds are pretty good that the market is nowhere near saturated.
All you need to do is to make modifications to the service or product that will make it even more appealing than it already is. You can make it cheaper, faster, easier to use or even just more convenient.
Get some friends together and brainstorm ways to make the offer, product or price of your competitors' product/service more convenient, customized, easier to use, cheaper or faster. You'll be surprised at how easy it can be to use the expensive research and trial and error of others to succeed.
