"Kidney Swap Program"
Kidney Swap Program: Written- By: Shoba Bakhsh
About a year ago, I was involved in a kidney swap program, where I donated one of my kidney so my husband could receive a kidney. When I first heard about the program, I taught what a great idea for those who want to donate a kidney to their loved ones to save their lives, but are unable to do it because of different blood types. I called N.Y Presbyterian Hospital and told them to enroll me in the program so my husband could benefit by getting a kidney.
Within a couple of months I received a call from the hospital, they found a match. I was so happy. I couldn't wait to share the good news with my husband and children. I knew my kids would have their father again whom they loved and adored very much.
On the morning of the surgery, my husband and I and my sister arrived to the hospital at 6 A.M. After we checked in we went to separate rooms. I couldn't see who I was donating my kidney to and my husband couldn't see who he was receiving a kidney from, it was a mystery.
After I met with my surgeon and anesthesiologist a nurse walked me into the operating room, the room was very cold. I lie down on a stretcher, the nurse and anesthesiologist made me very comfortable. They threw a couple of blankets over me so I could be warm and comfortable. The anesthesiologist told me that she was going to put a needle in my arm and all I would feel is a little pinch.
The next thing I knew someone was calling and saying get up. I told her my entire body was itching. The doctor told her to give me some peninsulin for the itching.
When I woke up a few hours later I asked my sister how my husband was doing, she told me he just came out of surgery and was asking for me. I talked to him briefly.
My entire experience was wonderful and I would do it again in a heartbeat.
