How to Add More Horsepower to My 2000 Firebird
- 1). Add a cold air intake to the engine. The temperature of the air entering the engine will dictate the amount of power that can be achieved. Colder air allows more oxygen to enter the cylinder, since cold air is denser. Therefore, more combustion occurs with each engine stroke, and thus produces more horsepower.
- 2). Install a high-performance chip into your ECU. This can be a big help if the car also has had other modifications to boost the horsepower. A new chip can be programmed to get better engine performance, which in turn can produce greater horsepower. Chips are available from car after-market retailers and are an easy engine upgrade.
- 3). Decrease the air resistance in the engine. Installing larger air filters, polishing the intake manifolds and reducing the piping for the intake all help in this regard.
- 4). Eliminate any back pressure from the exhaust by installing a high-performance exhaust. These systems will have larger exhaust pipes, headers and free-flowing mufflers that eliminate back pressure. enabling air to easily exit the system without "stealing" power from the engine. Polishing the inside of the exhaust will also decrease back pressure as can installing a dual exhaust system.
- 5). Install a new engine head that has several intake and exhaust valves per cylinder. In one step, the air flow into and out of the engine is dramatically improved. Also, adding performance cams boosts the horsepower significantly. This alteration is recommended if you have changed the air intake and exhaust system to high-performance options.
- 6). Decrease the weight of the vehicle by getting rid of parts and items that are not used. Alternatively, go as light as possible when installing new parts. The lighter the vehicle, the more power that can be produced, since the engine does not have to work as hard to move the vehicle.
