2007 Avalanche Brake Controller Installation

2
    • 1). Examine the rear of your Avalanche to determine whether or not it has the optional tow package. If a functional seven-pin trailer plug is present, your vehicle has the tow package.

    • 2). Install the brake controller unit into the cab of the truck using provided hardware and following the manufacturer's instructions. Make sure that the unit is installed in a location where you can reach it easily and without inhibiting your ability to operate other controls.

    • 3). Locate the wire bundle which is under the dash, to the left of the brake pedal. It should consist of several wires bound together by white tape.

    • 4). Examine the wires using the circuit tester. Find the wire that only has a signal when the brake pedal is pressed, and attach it to the red wire on your brake controller.

    • 5). Find the wire with a constant 12-volt signal and attach it to the black wire on the brake controller.

    • 6). Identify the ground wire (having no positive signal), which is typically black, and attach it to the white wire on the brake controller.

    • 7). Attach the trailer brake wire, which is usually dark blue, to the blue wire on the brake controller. If your Avalanche has the tow package, this is the final step. If not, continue to the next step.

    • 8). Locate the original factory towing harness on your Avalanche. It will be located near the rear of the vehicle, likely with the spare tire. Pull it out so that it can be accessed from the rear bumper.

    • 9). Install the bracket that came with the replacement trailer connector, using a power drill and self-tapping screws. Mount it to a flat, level surface on the underside of the bumper that will not interfere with the hitch operation.

    • 10

Install the wiring adapter into the bracket, using the provided hardware. Tighten with a screwdriver to make sure that it is secure in the bracket. Route the wire harness over the hitch and remove the cap on the harness.

    • 11

Connect the adapter to the harness and make sure they fit together securely. A brief click should signal a proper connection.

    • 12

Zip-tie the harness behind the bumper, where it will not interfere with any of the vehicle's parts. Make sure none of the harness cables hang down so low as to snag while driving.
