This isn't the first time that the singer-songwriter Katy Perry has aimed for mainstream pop success. After an abortive career as teen Christian artist Katy Hudson, her birth name, Perry finally hooked up with the production talent and record label honchos who could push her over the top. Seven years after the Katy Hudson album, this single is bringing Katy Perry to the attention of the world, and it is a brilliant recording.

The single "UR So Gay," an immediate predecessor to "I Kissed a Girl," did garner some serious attention in the music industry, but its lyrics are too flagrant for widespread acceptance. However, "I Kissed a Girl," fueled by an instrumental wallop provided courtesy of producer Dr. Luke, is the perfect breakthrough.

Bathed in praise for "cherry chapstick" and "soft skin, red lips, so kissable," Katy Perry states her unquestionable independence with stylish spirit.
