Cisapride in Cats
- Cisapride can relieve esophageal reflux in cats, and it also helps empty the stomach more rapidly in cats with reduced gastrointestinal motility. This condition causes bloating and nausea.
- The medication also is useful for cats with chronic constipation because it increases motility of the entire gastrointestinal tract.
- Chronic constipation can lead to a condition called feline megacolon in which the colon becomes distended and does not perform efficiently. Cisapride is beneficial for this condition as well.
- In cats with megaesophagus, an abnormal enlargement of the esophagus, cisapride helps speed up food transit through the esophagus and avoid regurgitation.
- The most common side effects associated with cisapride in cats are diarrhea and abdominal cramps.
