How to File a 1040-EZ by Internet
- 1). Calculate your income to determine if you qualify to file Form 1040EZ. You must make less than $100,000 in gross wages in the tax year and be under 65 years of age to qualify.
- 2). Prepare your 1040EZ tax return using tax software. A partnership of tax software firms have formed Free File Alliance, a free electronic filing program that permits taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of $58,000 or less to file their tax returns using online software. Other eligibility criteria includes your state, age and military status.
- 3). Fill out the 1040EZ completely. Both the Free File forms and commercial tax software forms are exact electronic replicas of the IRS paper forms. Ensure that your tax return has your correct contact information and Social Security number.
- 4). Sign your tax return with an electronic signature. The tax software reroutes you to Form 8879 IRS E-File Electronic Signature Authorization, which you must complete. It generates a five-digit PIN that you must use to file your taxes online. Alternatively, the IRS uses your PIN from previous e-filed returns.
- 5). Select the option to e-file your return when it's completed. Continue to a "Transmit" screen, which may vary depending on your choice of tax preparation software. Click "Transmit Returns Now" to e-file your 1040EZ with the IRS.
- 6). Watch your email for a confirmation from the tax preparation software that your tax return was transmitted. You will also receive an email later when the tax return is accepted by the IRS.
- 7). Print a paper copy of your return or make a backup copy on a CD after the return has been accepted.
