What to Do When Visiting Bermuda From a Cruise Ship
- Bermuda is known for its pink sand beaches, and there are many available choices. If you're looking for a quiet, out-of-the-way beach, Shelly Bay, north of Hamilton, or Somerset Long Bay, to the west, may be your best bet. If you're looking for a good spot for kids, Elbow Beach is known for its calm waters protected by a coral reef, and Horseshoe Beach is a popular destination with a lifeguard on duty throughout the summer.
- In St. George, the Royal Naval Dockyard is a must-see, with its mixture of history (British ships were launched against the United States from there during the War of 1812) and modern entertainment (many of the buildings are now shops, pubs, markets and museums). A ferry leaves from Hamilton at least once an hour, or you can take a bus. If you decide to stay in Hamilton, you can take a horse-drawn carriage ride through the Old City and marvel at the colorful mansions along Front Street.
- Hamilton is known for its many good restaurants, from high-end local cuisine to gourmet ethnic food. Port O'Call is a popular seafood restaurant, right on Front Street, with plenty of character. If you're looking for some local flavor, try the informal Lobster Pot for fresh seafood and chowder. Ascots, at the Royal Palms Hotel, or Waterlot Inn, part of the Fairmont Southampton Princess, are good options if you want to splurge on a high-end meal that capitalizes on Bermuda's abundance of fresh fish and seafood.
- With many golf courses in just over 20 square miles, the options for finding 18 great holes to play are varied. The Port Royal Golf Course, a Robert Trent Jones design, is well known among golf enthusiasts, and it hosts the PGA Grand Slam in both 2009 and 2010. You'll want to call weeks in advance for a tee time, however, as this posh club fills up quickly. Scuba diving and snorkeling are also popular pastimes in Bermuda, and with all the legends of the Bermuda Triangle surrounding you, there's no telling what treasures you'll discover underwater.
