How to Attach a Strain Gauge to Wood

19
    • 1). Clean the surface of the wood where the gauge will be attached. Clean the wood surface with the cotton swabs and rubbing alcohol, removing any dirt and grime.

    • 2). Outline the framework of the strain gauge on the piece of wood with a pencil.

    • 3). Prepare to attach the gauge. Use tweezers to pick up the gauge. Align the gauge to the framework outline. Attach 7 inches of cellophane tape onto the gauge. Press the sides of the tape to hold the gauge in position.

    • 4). Spread the bonding agent over the wood. Apply the bonding agent by lifting one side of the tape. Spread enough epoxy to fully cover the gauge. Apply pressure to the gauge using your thumb for 2 minutes.

    • 5). Detach the cellophane tape from the wood. Remove slowly to diminish any damage to the strain gauge.

    • 6). Cut the lead wires with the wire cutter down to 1 inch. Twist and turn the lead wires to join them together.

    • 7). Apply solder to the copper ends of the strain gauge with the soldering gun. Remove excess solder from the gauge using cotton swabs and rubbing alcohol.

    • 8). Anchor the lead wires in place with the duct tape.
