Scholarships for Women With Disabilities
- A professional women's service organization, Quota International of Fairbanks, provides scholarships to high school seniors with special attention to speech and hearing impaired and disadvantaged women and children. Academic performance, extracurricular activities and community service are some of the criteria that influence the awarding of the scholarships. Applicants submit a transcript and two letters of recommendation. Scholarships valued between $500 and $1,000 are usable at the college, university, vocational or technical school of the recipient's choosing.
- Two graduating high school seniors with documented learning disabilities are eligible for the Anne Ford and Allegra Ford Scholarship in pursuit of undergraduate degrees. Founded in 2002, the Anne Ford Scholarship increased in value in 2009 with a donation from her daughter, Allegra. It became a scholarship for two with the addition of Allegra Ford's name. Candidates for the scholarship include students with a learning disability, a strong commitment to earning a college degree and who believe in increasing opportunities for others with learning disabilities. In 2011, the value of the scholarship was $10,000.
- Deaf female doctoral students are eligible for two fellowship awards from the International Alumnae of Delta Epsilon Sorority (IADES) of Gallaudet University. The IADES Fellowship Award is for students who are not sorority alumnae, while the IADES Betty G. Miller Fellowship Award is for sorority alumnae. In the case of both fellowships, candidates require a minimum 3.0 grade point average and 12 or more completed credits.
- For 2011, the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) had a wide range of scholarships for specific fields of study. For example, the R.L. Gillette Scholarship offered two awards, $1,000 each, to a female undergraduate student enrolled in a full-time, four-year degree program in literature or music. Applicants submit a performance tape or CD of 30 minutes or less or a creative writing sample. Similarly, the Gladys C. Anderson Memorial Scholarship, valued at $1,000, is for a female undergraduate or graduate student of classical or religious music. The AFB website provides comprehensive instructions for scholarship applicants on how to prepare their application packages, including for multiple applications. All applications require completion of a three-section essay, transcript(s), proof of post-secondary acceptance in an accredited program, two letters of recommendation, proof of U.S. citizenship and proof of legal blindness.
