How to Extract a Broken Drill Bit
- 1). Grab the end of the drill bit with a set of vice grips. Lock the vice grips down securely and work the drill bit out by twisting it back and forth while pulling.
- 2). Use a screw extractor, also known as a bolt extractor. A screw extractor looks like a tapered drill bit with a square tip. Drill a starter hole in the broken end of the drill bit, then hammer in the screw extractor. Once the extractor is wedged firmly n the broken drill bit, grab it and twist it out using the vice grips.
- 3). Place a washer over the hole where the broken drill bit is.If it is slightly below the surface, beat the washer in gently with a ball peen hammer until the inside ofthe washer is touching the broken bot. Use the wire welder to weld the washer to the broken bit. Then weld a nut to the washer. Use a socket wrench to turn the nut and extract the broken drill bit.
- 4). Take the item with the broken drill bit in it to a local machine shop or locate one that will come to you and extract the broken drill bit.
