How to Write in Greek
Things You'll Need
Instructions
1Photoopy or print out a version of the Greek alphabet. You should find a chart that illustrates the individual symbols, its phonetics and how it is written in both upper case and lower case. Most of these charts will also include the dipthongs in the Greek alphabet, and the counterparts to each letter in English.
2
Learn how to write the basic letters of the Greek alphabet, starting with alpha and ending with omega. There are 24 letters in the Greek alphabet, and you should practice writing both the upper-case and lower-case versions until you have them completely memorized.
3
Use your chart to employ dipthongs in the Greek alphabet, which are unique sounds created through the compound use of two letters. These seven dipthongs generally create differences between vowel soundings.
4
Memorize each letter of the Greek alphabet according to the sound it produces, as well as its counterpart in English. This will help you to write entire words in Greek based upon English translations, as well as when you take dictation.
5
Practice the correct punctuation marks when you write in Greek. While the periods and the commas are the same as in English, a semicolon is written as a period near the top of the letter, and a question mark is written as a semicolon.
6
Read additional books on how to write in Greek, such as Roger D. Woodard's "Greek Writing: From Knossos to Homer" (see Resources below). This title not only discusses the history and development of the Greek alphabet, but it explores the general history of linguistics as well.
