How to Troubleshoot a Rheem R22 13 SEER Air Conditioner

1
    • 1). Check the power cord on the Rheem air conditioner and plug into a working power outlet if the air conditioner is not operating. Replace or reset the circuit breaker or fuse as necessary and turn the main power switch to "On" to ensure the unit has power.

    • 2). Program the thermostat to a temperature that is 15 degrees or more below the current outdoor temperature if the Rheem air conditioner has power but is not running. Set the program mode to "Cool" and the program switch to "Auto" to turn the air conditioner on as needed to reach the set point temperature.

    • 3). Disconnect power to the Rheem air conditioner and open the access panel to slide out the air filter if there is power and cooling but the air conditioner is running too much. Replace the filter if the current filter is disposable, or clean with a vacuum brush attachment or soapy water if the filter is permanent. If the filter is washed, dry the filter completely before returning to the air conditioner unit.

    • 4). Open the front access panel and use a soft brush to carefully clean the condenser coil fins if the air conditioner is running loudly or not cooling properly. Use a shop vac to carefully suction up dirt, debris and water from the bottom of the unit. Empty the drain pan if full. Close the access panel completely before restoring power, as the unit won't operate if the access door is ajar.

    • 5). Contact Rheem for assistance as needed if the above methods do not resolve the problem, as problems may exist with the compressor, motor, wiring or thermostat and this requires professional help.
