Ph Swings Are Dangerous

14
Every pond owner has to know reading the pond water alkalinity or acidity. Why you should give proper attention to the ponds pH level. Well, dont take Math seriously on this matter, because your fish health depends on the water quality.

The waters pH is the measurement of the alkalinity and acidity. The pH is composed of free hydrogen ions that may become profuse or low. A pH reading of 7 is neutral , while 7 and up is alkaline, and 7 and below is acidic. These calculations are important to know if your fish are living accordingly in a good water quality.

How do I know if the pH is good?

Test kits make it possible, because you cant measure it by yourself. These kits are available in your local garden store, and can be easily installed and used in your ponds or aquariums. Most test kits provide readings on pH, hardness, and other parameters. Some kits may show results in just few seconds. Always record the readings you have taken and do the readings day and night for comparison.

What is the appropriate pH for kois?

Kois are indeed beautiful and colourful thats why you have to make sure they are living in ideal water pH. The pH of 7.5 is considered the ideal measurement because most kois want stable pH level between 6.8-8.2 as long as the pH stays steady.

Does the change in pH affect fish health?

The change or unfavourable pH can directly affect fish health. This may distress their skin; low pH can burn the fish skin, while high pH can chap their skin. When pH alters beyond .5 within 24 hours, the water experiences the so called pH swing. pH swings must be prevented because they are toxic to fish. Continuous pH swing deprives the fish from performing its bodily functions to prevent disease.

What influences pH swings?

Ph swings are commonly blamed to the natural CO2 exchange cycle of plants during the day and night. Plants normally release more oxygen during the day, but give off less at night. Other factors that may contribute to pH swings are acid rain, excess or decaying vegetation, fertilizer run off, and limestone.

How can I balance the pH level and make it stable?

Buy a test kit and check the water hardness first before adjusting the pH level. pH buffer can help but be careful in using this one. If ph decreaser is used in hard water, the hardness will be reduced instantly, but the pH may change and become unstable within 24 hours due to the buffering capacity of the water.

When dealing with hard water problem, you can change the water or use Pond Acid Buffer, which reduces both pH and buffering capacity to lessen the water hardness.

For soft water and low pH, the pond pH buffer raises the Ph and, at the same time, adds buffers to boost water hardness, keeping the ph stable.
For medium to soft water, a pH adjuster can be used. pH up can be added when acid rain or runoff interferes, while pH decreaser lessens pH if limestone rocks are accumulating in the pond.
