Types of Cockroaches and the Life Cycle of a Cockroach

2
Did you know that there are thousands of cockroach species that exist on this earth? Ever taken the time to get to know each and every one of them? Perhaps it wouldn't hurt to have just a little bit of knowledge on cockroaches to help achieve the end goal - complete eradication of nasty roaches from our household and urbanized living.
There are around 5 to 10 million insects species in the world, and of all of them, the one very distant insect that our urbanized society has encountered repeatedly would be the cockroach.
Cockroaches are medium-sized insects that have flat bodies with long antennae, and a mid portion behind the head known as a pronotum.
Adult cockroaches have wings and some can fly several feet, although most barely lift off the ground.
They are nocturnal insects, extremely sensitive light and movement, literally scuttling once spotted.
Six common pest species inhabit buildings where food is stored or prepared.
They are known as German, American, oriental, Turkestan, brownbanded and smoky brown cockroaches.
The German and brown-banded species inhabit indoors, while Oriental, smokybrown, American, and Turkestan cockroaches usually live outdoors more, only invading indoors occasionally.
The most common indoor species is the German cockroach.
They thrive on water, food and humid warm areas.
One female cockroach can reproduce up to 30,000 cockroaches, which could be 10,000 times more than a human being! Warm weather is conducive to egg laying.
Each egg sac will hatch up to 30 eggs, with a new egg produced a new egg case every few weeks.
Within the coziness of a warm and humid household, one could very well be hosting a cockroach factory without realizing it! If you have ever spotted a cockroach dancing about with its wings raised in excitement, you have been fortunate enough to have caught a female roach exposing its reproductive organs, releasing pheromones for the males to initiate mating behaviour.
The male roach transfers his sperm packet into the female reproductive organs, and voila, the female cockroach would be pregnant for life! Nearly all cockroaches carry their eggs in a sac (ootheca), outside the abdomen.
Eggs hatch within 3-4 months, as the little hatchlings gulp for air.
Cute - but not so cute when they become adult roaches! Baby roaches or nymphs are usually white, turning brown shortly, resembling small, wingless adult roaches.
It takes them from weeks to a year or more to become adults, depending on species.
A cockroach can live a few months while others live for up to a couple of years.
