Find out why Montagu Place is the right choice for a stay in Marylebone
Montagu Place is a cozy boutique hotel in Marylebone. This Grade II listed Georgian townhouse is in a quiet residential area but close to Baker Street, Oxford Street and the delights of London's West End.
This small friendly hotel is all about going further to offer that extra service that makes them the right choice.
There are just 16 guest bedrooms divided into three categories: Comfy, Fancy, and Swanky.
Comfy / Fancy / Swanky
The three room categories mean you can choose a standard room for a short break or upgrade for more luxury when staying for longer.
A Comfy Room still has all you will need including a comfortable double bed, armchair, and a desk and chair for working. All of the rooms have free wifi, large TVs, a laptop-size safe, and complimentary refreshments including bottled water, teas and a cafetiere with fresh coffee.
A Fancy Room means more space and a larger bed. And a Swanky Room means even more space with more original Georgian features, an even bigger bed, and a roll top bath and walk-in shower. A Swanky Room can also have twin beds, if needed.
2015 Refurbishment
While the heritage building doesn't allow them to expand, Montagu Place decided to improve what they already have with a complete refurbishment.
The refreshing new look means new color schemes in all rooms and public areas. Some of the changes are subtle, such as new lighting, and others stand out, like the new bed dressings in warm heritage colors.
Montagu Place strive for a 'home from home' feel with that extra comfort that makes it even more special and welcoming.
Montagu Place Review
After dashing around the West End, arriving at Montagu Place felt very peaceful. Staff gave us a lovely welcome and while I chose a couple of complimentary glossy magazines to read my daughter chose a few complimentary toffees.
We stopped for a while at the ground floor guest lounge and then went to our Comfy Room on the lower ground floor.
A Comfy Room has plenty of extra space on one side of the bed and all of the amenities you'll need. We had a lovely cast iron fireplace and the wifi was decent. There was enough space to set up the suitcase stand for our stay and the desk was large enough to work next to the tea and coffee making facilities.
I would have liked a room fridge but this is one of those reasons for considering an upgrade as all Swanky rooms have a mini fridge and the hotel will even stock it with your preferred drinks before arrival. Our wardrobe was small but more than enough space for our short stay.
All of the hotel bathrooms have Molton Brown toiletries and I was impressed to discover the large mirror must have a heated section as it didn't steam up when we had hot showers.
The room was spotless so standards are high here. I would have liked an extra plug outlet on both sides of the bed for charging phones though as the lamps used old round pin plugs.
Considering how central this hotel is it really is a quiet location. This did mean I could hear sounds in the hotel more but only because there was no noise from outside. We put a towel along the bottom of the door to block the light from the corridor and we both slept well.
Breakfast is not included but is available. And other meals can be provided at lunch and dinner from a local Thai restaurant.
The hotel has its own app and a useful London booklet of things to do in London with maps available in the rooms for guests.
Do note, as this is heritage building there is no lift/elevator.
Great Location
Montagu Place is just a short walk to Madame Tussauds, Sherlock Holmes Museum, Regent's Park (and the St John's Lodge 'Secret' Garden). The Marylebone neighborhood is a delight to explore with nice boutiques and restaurants along Marylebone High Street. Daunt Books is a must and if you would like something 'traditional' for dinner do go to the Golden Hind for fish and chips.
Within sight of the hotel is a flat that was owned by Ringo Starr and it was where John Lennon and Yoko Ono had their naked photos taken. Jimi Hendrix stayed there too (at a different time, of course).
If traveling with children, there's a playground at Paddington Street Gardens.
Conclusion
Montagu Place is an intimate boutique hotel with lovely staff who will go that extra mile to make your stay perfect.
